The Real Authentic Dole Whip (you can make at home!)

Hey! I wrote a cookbook! If you love my Disney Parks recipes, check out the link here for The Unofficial Disney Parks Cookbook that I wrote! Available for pre-order NOW!

DOLE WHIP! It is arguably the best Disney Treat.

Dole Whip:  How do I love thee? Let me count the ways:

  • From the ages of 5-10, I lived in Anaheim Hills, California.  If you aren’t familiar with this area, I’ll tell you I lived 15 minutes from Disneyland.  This is when my love of Disney was born.  I could hear the fireworks each night as I laid in my bed.  We went to the Park so often we could just go on one ride and leave.  Dole Whip is a quintessential Disneyland treat, and I’ve been eating it a long time

  • When I was 10 I visited Hawaii for the first time.  What a fantastic place!  On the island of Oahu there is the Dole plantation, where you can see how pineapple is grown and harvested.  They also serve Dole Whip there!  Three years ago I had the pleasure of going to Hawaii again and got to taste that sweet treat on the island once more.

  • When I did my Disney College Program in 2010, my friends and I lived Disney Life to the fullest.  One night, we decided to go to the Polynesian Resort (Now the Polynesian VILLAGE Resort…) and get Dole Whips and watch a movie on a laptop while sitting on the sandy beach of Seven Seas Lagoon.  I’ll never forget seeing the castle in the intro of the movie and seeing the Magic Kingdom Cinderella Castle at the same time behind the laptop.  Such a cool moment.  And all with a Dole Whip in my hand.

What was this 1960?  These images are so bad.  Oh I remember.  It was the Florida Humidity.  Proceed.

It’s safe to say this treat has a special place in my heart.  Because of this, since being away from Disney, I’ve tried and tried to recreate it to perfection.  I’ve scoured Pinterest looking for a legit recipe, and have made many of the recipes only to be utterly disappointed.  Most of them use pineapple chunks or pieces — real Dole Whip is perfectly smooth.  Many of them have heavy cream in them — real Dole Whip is dairy free.  I kept getting closer and closer to achieving what I thought was like the real thing, until!  I found THE REAL THING available in a simple powder on Amazon!  This is the Dole Whip they use at Disney Parks and in Hawaii.  It’s not like the real thing.  It is the real thing.  So, if you are a Dole Whip lover like myself, or just someone who appreciates a delicious cool treat, Ta Da!  And you’re welcome 🙂

Read on for the “recipe” (the bag it comes in is for a commercial machine, so if you have a regular ice cream maker like mine, I’ll help with the conversion) and the video!

If you would like your own Dole Whip at home, click this link to buy it!  Also, if you don’t have an ice cream maker yet, I recommend the one I use, a Cuisinart (Affiliate)

(Note this is a large bag that makes LOTS of Dole Whip!  Not just one batch!

  1. Whisk the pineapple soft serve mix into the cold water. Pour into a standard ice cream maker. Mine takes 20 minutes to get the perfect whip texture. If your machine is different, monitor it until it solidifies.
  2. If you want the iconic swirl, scoop into a piping bag with a star tip and squeeze into a cup. But, for everyday scooping, any old spoon and bowl will do!

Who has had Dole Whip before??

My Dole Whip turned out more like a slushee even after 35 minutes in the ice cream maker. The taste was perfect, but it just wasn’t frozen enough. I poured it into a glass container and froze it overnight, then used a regular electric mixer to fluff it up. Whichever leads me to believe you don’t need the ice cream machine at all to make it.

The one cup mix to 3 cups water ratio seems perfect for the flavor though.

Oh wow, weird! What kind of ice cream maker do you have? Mine comes out solid but soft from the machine, so sometimes I like to firm it up in the freezer, but definitely edible out of the machine (like in the video)

How much does this make? My ice cream machine is 1 qt so I want to make sure I don’t overfill it.

My machine is 1.5 quarts and it uses the whole space to mix and freeze. Reduce the mix and water by 1/3 each and hopefully that will be the perfect amount!
